The Commons

Illustration, Copywriting & Character Design

How do you create a story to promote a co-living community that houses post-secondary students and senior citizens?

For The Commons I crafted a story that shows the friendship of a young student and senior woman blossoming over time. I used simple line drawings in the beginning of their relationship and added more colour as the two characters get to know each other. Their world becomes fuller and more colourful the more they get to know each other, showing that intergenerational relationships have the power to make our lives and world richer.

It started the same as always. Some simple lines. Hello’s and how are you’s. A lonely day made less alone. Because of you

A stranger, you were slowly coloured in. With simple moments of helpfulness

Afternoon tea and shared stories.

Up close, I started to see what I couldn’t before. How shadow and light had shaped you. How we were so similar. Our lives only separated by time.

Up close, I found something rare. Something special. No longer a stranger but a friend like no other.

But if you get closer. If you go beyond the lines. You will create something far more beautiful.

It always starts the same. With some simple lines. And most people stop there.

The Commons. Where common ground is commonplace.
